Everyone in today's society looks in the mirror and see’s what’s wrong with themselves. People always talk about “how fat they are,” and “how ugly they are.” We try to change our own appearances when we can't.  Idealism is the belief to pursue abstract ideas, especially when they are on realistic. People love to try and be the best when they cannot. Due to social media many girls are pressured by reality stars like Kim Kardashian. Kim Kardashian is an icon for idealism to teenage girls. When people try to achieve idealism this can often lead to the tragic downfall of oneself, as scene in the story Birthmark.

Short story, Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne reflects the theme of idealism. Characters Aylmer, and Georgiana are long married and love each other. Georgina is a beautiful women, as many people think so. Georgina has been perceived as gorgeous and beautiful her whole entire life. Georgina is flawed with a birthmark on her face. Aylmer said to Georgina, “has it ever occurred to you that the mark upon your cheek can be removed.” (2) Georgina was crushed when Aylmer said this to her. Aylmer wants his wife to be perfect, when in reality no girl is perfect. Aylmer has unrealistic ideas, and destroys Georgina. Aylmer also said “this is the slightest possible defect, which we hesitate whether to term a defect or a beauty shocks me, as being the visible mark of earthly imperfection”(3) Aylmer is saying how he loves Georgina, but would love her more if the slight birthmark would be removed. Georgina agrees to remove her birthday mark, which leads to her tragic death.

Every girl wants to be picture perfect just like the Kardashians. The Kardashians damage our youth generation, and brainwash young kids. Kim Kardashian is perceived as perfect, but is she really perfect? Kim Kardashian is and icon for idealism as she wants to be flawless. The pressure teenage girls face because of social media is foolish. According to Ineedalighthouse.org, “20% of teens will have symptoms of depression before childhood.” Is this because teenage girls are pressured to be the best form of themselves they can be? Idealism is not true and one can never achieve it. People need to love and trust the person they are. People cannot see the bad in people like Aylmer does, and embrace the person they truly are be be a transcendentalists. If you are a transcendentalist you are a person that does not care about being perfect. You are contempt with yourself. When you have a transcendental spirit you are one with nature. The wind are your face, the sound of birds chirping, and the texture of sand, brings you happiness. You don't squander on technologies we have in the twenty-first century.
